The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) stands as a symbol of academic excellence and national heritage. As the oldest and most prestigious public university in Tanzania, UDSM has played a pivotal role in the country’s educational and socio-economic development.
A Legacy of Academic Excellence
The roots of UDSM date back to October 1961, when it was established as an affiliate College of the University of London. At its inception, the institution had just one faculty the Faculty of Law (now known as the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law) which began with only 14 students and 3 faculty members.
In 1963, UDSM transitioned into a constituent college of the University of East Africa, a move that marked the beginning of its expansion in both scope and academic offerings. From a single degree programme in law, the University had grown to offer five different degree programmes by 1969.
Following the dissolution of the University of East Africa in 1970, UDSM became an independent university, alongside the University of Nairobi in Kenya and Makerere University in Uganda.
