BRELA is a Government Executive Agency established under the Executive Agencies Act No. 30 of 1997 and published on 8th October 1999 through Government Notice No. 294. The Agency was officially inaugurated on 3rd December 1999 to facilitate the orderly conduct of business and the provision of business regulatory services.
BRELA administers various business laws, including:

- The Business Names Act Cap 213 R.E. 2002
- The Trade and Service Marks Act Cap 236 R.E. 2002
- The Patents (Registration) Act Cap 217 R.E. 2002
- The National Industries Registration and Licensing Act Cap 46 R.E. 2002

Additionally, BRELA monitors registered and licensed entities to ensure legal compliance and provides dispute resolution services related to patents, trade, and service marks registrations.

DEPUTY REGISTRAR – LICENSING (1 POST)
Employer: Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA)
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Supervises: Manager – Business Licensing Section and Manager – Industrial Licensing Section
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administer the National Industries (Licensing and Registration) Act No. 10 of 1967 and the Business Licensing Act of 1972.
- Advise on matters related to industrial and business licensing.
- Supervise and coordinate all operations within the Directorate of Licensing.
- Review and approve industrial and business licenses.
- Suspend, revoke, or cancel licenses when necessary.
- Liaise with relevant institutions and local government authorities to facilitate licensing processes through online platforms.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Economics, Law, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Statistics, International Trade, Economics and Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, or Business Administration from a recognized institution. The Master’s Degree must be related to a Bachelor’s Degree.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of eight (8) years in a related field, with at least two (2) years at a senior level.
Age Limit:
- Not more than 45 years, except for those currently in Public Service.

HEAD OF BUSINESS REGISTRY UNIT (1 POST)
Employer: Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA)
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Supervises: All staff under the unit
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain electronic and manual records in compliance with government policies and regulations.
- Oversee file classification, indexing, and records management.
- Manage business files and registers for various licenses and trademarks.
- Coordinate implementation of records retention and disposal schedules.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Records Management, Archives, Archive and Documentation, Records and Information Management, or equivalent from a recognized institution. The Master’s Degree must be related to a Bachelor’s Degree.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of eight (8) years in a related field, with at least two (2) years at a senior level.
Age Limit:
- Not more than 45 years, except for those currently in Public Service.

PATENTS SECTION MANAGER (1 POST)

Reports to: Director of Industrial Property
Supervises: All staff under the unit
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the administration of the Patents Act (Cap 217) R.E. 2002.
- Advise on amendments of laws and regulations related to patents.
- Review and process applications for patent grants and issue respective certificates.
- Liaise with national and international institutions on matters related to patents.
- Promote innovation and intellectual property awareness.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Economics, Law, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Statistics, International Trade, Economics and Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, or Commerce (Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance, or Accountancy) from a recognized institution. The Master’s Degree must be related to a Bachelor’s Degree.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of eight (8) years in a related field, with at least two (2) years at a senior level.
