If you plan to drive on South African roads, having a valid driving licence is not just important it’s the law. Whether you’re looking to drive a motorcycle, car, minibus, or heavy vehicle, this guide will walk you through the process of applying for your South African driving licence.

About Applying for a Driving Licence

Driving Licence

Before applying for a driving licence, you must first obtain a learner’s licence. Once you have that, you can apply for the appropriate driving licence depending on the type of vehicle you plan to drive:

Vehicle Categories and Licence Codes:

  • Code A1: Motorcycles ≤125cc (Minimum age: 17)
  • Code A: Motorcycles >125cc (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code B: Light motor vehicles ≤3,500 kg (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code C1: Vehicles 3,500–16,000 kg (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code C: Vehicles >16,000 kg (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code EB: Light articulated vehicles ≤3,500 kg (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code EC1: Articulated heavy vehicles 3,500–16,000 kg (Minimum age: 18)
  • Code EC: Articulated heavy vehicles >16,000 kg (Minimum age: 18)

What You Should Do

Follow these steps to apply for your driving licence:

  • Visit a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) near you.
  • Bring the following documents:
    • Your learner’s licence
    • Your Identity Document (ID)
    • Four black-and-white ID photographs (confirm exact number with your DLTC)
    • Proof of residential address (e.g., utility bill or an affidavit if not in your name)
    • Proof from a ward councillor if you live in an informal settlement
    • Booking fee
  • Gauteng residents must apply online via NaTIS.
  • Complete the DL1 Application for Driving Licence form at the DLTC.
  • Keep the receipt as proof of payment and booking confirmation.
  • On your test date
    • Arrive at the DLTC at the specified time.
    • Your documents and learner’s licence will be verified.
    • You’ll be tested by a qualified examiner.
  • If you pass the test:
    • Your fingerprints will be taken.
    • An eye test will be done (or submit a certified test from an optometrist).
    • Pay the issuing fee for a temporary licence.
  • You’ll be notified when your driving licence card is ready for collection.

How Long Does It Take?

  • Driving licence card: Ready in 4 to 6 weeks
  • Temporary driving licence: Issued immediately

Fees vary by location. Contact your local licensing office to confirm the applicable costs.
