The Dar es Salaam City Council has been in charge of the City from 1961 to 1972, when the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania dissolved all the councils in the country and came under the control of the Central Government.

The Central Government repatriated local governments, under the Local Government Act (Local Authorities) and.  8 of 1982, when the City Council commenced its responsibilities to provide services to the people beginning in 1983.

 In 1996 the Central Government dissolved the City Council and created the Dar es Salaam City Commission, by Government Proclamation.  110 and 111 dated 28 June 1996.

 The City Commission worked for a period of four years, during which in 2000 the Government created four Local Government Authorities of the Dar es Salaam Region under the law of Local Government (Local Authorities).  8 of 1982, as amended by law and.  6 of 1999.
