The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has officially opened applications for the 2026 External Bursary Scheme aimed at supporting financially deserving students who plan to pursue undergraduate studies at South African universities.
The SARB plays a critical role in ensuring economic well-being by maintaining price and financial stability, regulating the financial sector, managing interest rates, distributing banknotes and coins, and promoting the overall stability of the country’s financial system.

Bursary Requirements
To qualify for this bursary, applicants must:
- Have provisional acceptance into an undergraduate programme at a South African university.
- Achieve a minimum average of 70% in the June Grade 12/Matric exams. The bursary is awarded subject to final results.
- Be under the age of 30.
- Be financially needy, meaning they are unable to attend university without bursary support.
How to Apply
The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 30 September 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.
Applicants must include:
- A copy of their June examination results
- Proof of provisional acceptance from a recognised university (with a student number)
- Any other supporting documents

Bursary Agreement
Shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews. Successful applicants will be required to sign a bursary agreement with the South African Reserve Bank.
