Department of Water Resources Engineering (WRED) in the College of Engineering and Technology, University of Dar es Salaam in collaboration with African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Water Centre of Excellence at Rhodes University has secured funds to implement activities that will contribute to the project entitled
“Unlocking resilient benefits from African water resources” awarded by the United Kingdom Research and Innovation, Global Challenges Research Funds –(UKRI-GCRF).

The project aims at sustainable water resource development and focuses on the novel research theory, methodologies and practice in order to meet the UN SDGs and realise the Africa Water Vision 2025.

The aim is to apply transformative, transdisciplinary, community-engaged research, to shift water development outcomes towards SDGs.

In fulfilment of this research grant, and as a contribution to the successful management of water resources in Tanzania, WRED announces three scholarships for Masters Studies by thesis at UDSM: two (2) in Water Resources Engineering and one (1) in Social Studies for Water Resources.

These studies will commence in the academic year 2020/2021. The research topics should be aligned with the project  objectives as outlined below:

Topic 1: Climate change and land use impacts on hydrologic processes of watershed systems

Topic 2: Modelling water allocation scenarios to address equitable water supply and sharing of benefits from contested water use

Topic 3: Development of participatory governance to support water quality and supply system resilience and ecosystem protection.

2.0 Scope of Scholarship Water Resources Engineering

The scholarship is over a period of two (2) years of the Masters study and will cover;

  • Tuition fees
  • Direct university and student costs, and
  • Research funds as per available project funds and guidelines.

3.0 Application Requirements

Suitably qualified candidates are invited to submit a 2-3 pages concept note on the
topic of their choice from the topics above indicating;

  • The research title
  • Brief introduction
  • Research Objective(s)
  • Research approach (methodology)
  • Expected output (results), and
  • Any other relevant information in summary form.

The concept note should be accompanied with the proof of admission application/ acceptance to the relevant program at UDSM (i.e. MSc Water Resources Engineering by Thesis or Master of Integrated Water Resources Management by Thesis).

Candidate’s brief CV which among other relevant information should clearly indicate the candidate’s current occupation and include copies of Secondary Education and University certificates and transcripts. Candidates currently in employment must indicate their commitment to study full time as part-time studying is not acceptable.

4.0 Necessary Qualifications

Potential candidates must hold Bachelor degree in relevant fields of engineering and sociology respectively, with a GPA of at least 3.5/5.0 from a recognized university.

Selection will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and the quality of the concept note.

5.0 Mode of Application Water Resources Engineering Scholarship
