Police in Tanzania have confirmed dead of 45 people and 37 others injured in a stampede in Dar es Salaam last week when thousands of city residents showed up at a funeral service for the late President John Pombe Magufuli.
Police have been pressured to confirm the incident after one family confirmed the loss of their relatives in the stampede
Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Lazaro Mambosasa has since confirmed the incident but did not name the victims.
A video that has been circulated on social media shows people entering the Independence Stadium using informal channels, as the crowd grew.
Thousands of Dar es Salaam residents entered the stadium and others stood on the side of the road to pay their last respects to Magufuli’s body, which was surrounded several times inside the stadium and other streets of the city.
