U.S. President Joe Biden said on Saturday he had approved the deployment of additional military forces in Kabul to evacuate staff from the US embassy in Afghanistan.
In a statement, Joe Biden defended his decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, saying Afghan forces should defend themselves against the Taliban.
“After hearing the recommendations of our diplomatic, military and intelligence teams, I approved the deployment of nearly 5,000 U.S. troops to ensure the rescue operation of our embassy staff,“ said the US president.
Joe Biden said his administration had told Taliban officials in Qatar that any action that would jeopardize the safety of U.S. workers “would lead to a quick and powerful response from the US military.”
