The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has announced the decision of the Board of Directors of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority regarding the fares of ordinary class passengers for the Modern Railway Train (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Makutupora.
According to Mr. Salum Pazzy, Head of the Division of Relations and Communications LATRA when he gave the information on June 10, 2024 in the offices of LATRA Region of Dar es Salaam, said that the fares have been approved by the Board of Directors LATRA based on the distance of kilometers. For example, from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma is 444.0 kilometers where the fare is TZS. 15,500/=, and have also been obtained after working on the requests submitted by the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) and information received from the TRC and other stakeholders.
“These fares are for normal class for adults and children from the age of 4 to 12 where the fares will be paid by the passenger per kilometer. The fare to be paid by an adult and a child over 12 years old is TSH. 69.51 per kilometer, and a child from 4 to 12 years will pay TSH 34.76 per kilometer. In addition, a child under the age of four (4) will not pay the fare, however, their information and all passengers will be kept in the passenger information system that travels every day,” explained Mr. Pazzy.

He has also specified the conditions to be considered before starting to use those fares that the service provider (TRC) must have a transportation license, have a safety certificate for the railway infrastructure and wagons, use the electronic ticketing system, connect the ticketing system of electronic and LATRA systems, calculating payments and handling passenger information, fares paid, electronic tickets issued, Government taxes and legal fees and having key personnel for technical issues and operation of the SGR train including and certified drivers and attendants registered with LATRA.
Also, Mr. Pazzy has said that, the basic areas to be considered by the service provider include setting up a management system for providing information to travelers and a system for monitoring the progress of the train, setting fares for the trip from station to station in areas that are easily visible to passengers at all times , to ensure the presence of quality services for customers including the environment of stations (stations), cleanliness of carriages, food and drinks, clean and safe water, adequate lighting, and to establish a compensation procedure against disasters and loss of passenger luggage and to comply with the criteria of the safety of carriages and railway infrastructure in accordance with the Law, existing Rules of Procedure.
